CHAPTER FIVE
Shaun was at work when the call came from Jenny. Ironically it had been one of the few days he hadn’t deviated from his workload to spend at least a little time checking the news and the blog. Tomorrow was the Fourth of July holiday and since it was on a Friday, it meant trying to clear the decks for the three-day weekend during a busy time for consumers.
When his cell phone rang the first time, he was on a phone call with a field rep trying to wrap her workweek up after an audit of one of his accounts. It started ringing again almost right away after it went to voicemail so he looked to see who it was then quickly put the impatient woman on hold and answered.
“Jenny?”
“Shaun.” Her voice broke on his name.
“Oh God. Wait just a second, okay? Take a deep breath and I’ll be right back.”
He excused himself from the call with the woman on hold then started closing down his work area, saving his work as he got back on with Jenny.
“I’m back. Please tell me what happened. Caleb?”
She took a deep breath, then there was a masculine murmur before Caleb’s father said, “Shaun?”
“Yes, Cliff. What’s happened?” He was starting to panic, all of his focus on his cell phone. Giving up on his computer, he pushed away from his desk and stood.
“We don’t know exactly”—he cleared his throat—“or have any details yet, but Caleb’s crew was caught in a bad situation along with another crew.”
“Caught in a bad… You mean, what? Trapped by a fire? Burned?”
“I… We just don’t know yet. All we’ve heard is that Crew One was working and was trapped when the wind came up and accelerated the fire line. JT put a call out on his radio but they…”
Shaun was frozen, trying to process the terrifyingly minimal information. “They…” he prompted.
“They haven’t been able to raise them since. There’s a rescue effort going on right now.” Jenny said something in the background. “Okay, Jen, I’ll tell him. We’re going down to the local fire hall over here in town—you know the one they rent out for receptions and fundraisers? They’re making that a command center for information as more comes in. We’d be happy if you could join us there, since…”
“Yeah.” He just couldn’t listen to any more in that defeated tone of voice. “I’ll be there in about twenty or thirty minutes. I’m coming from work, so with people leaving on the holiday weekend, traffic might be pretty bad.” Of course it would be. “Hey, I have to go. I’ll see you there.” He hung up and tried to think. It was midafternoon, so it wouldn’t be hard to get out of the office. A lot of people had either taken the day off or were leaving early as well, though for vastly different reasons.
He didn’t want to talk to anyone, so he kept his head down as he left the building. It wasn’t until he was in the car that he thought of Toby.
